What Is a Propane Regulator and Why Do You Need One?

A propane regulator reduces the high pressure inside a propane tank — up to 250 PSI on a warm day — down to the low pressure your appliance needs, usually 11 inches of water column (about 0.4 PSI). Without a regulator, the appliance would receive far too much gas, creating a fire hazard and damaging the burner.

Every propane appliance in Canada must operate through a regulator that meets CSA or ULC certification. This is a safety requirement, not a suggestion.

Single-Stage vs Two-Stage Regulators

Single-stage regulators perform one pressure reduction and are used for small, simple systems like a single BBQ. They work well when the tank stays near the appliance. The main limitation: outlet pressure can vary as the tank level drops or temperature changes.

Two-stage regulators reduce pressure in two steps. The first stage drops tank pressure to about 10 PSI, and the second stage drops it to appliance pressure. This gives a steady, consistent output regardless of tank level. Two-stage regulators are recommended for RVs, generators and whole-house systems.

Understanding PSI and Water Column (WC)

  • High pressure (tank side): measured in PSI. A full 20 lb tank at 70°F sits around 145 PSI.
  • Low pressure (appliance side): measured in inches of water column. Most appliances use 11 WC (0.4 PSI).
  • Conversion: 1 PSI equals about 27.7 inches of water column.

When choosing a regulator, match the outlet pressure to the appliance requirement. BBQ regulators output 11 WC. RV systems typically use 11 WC through a two-stage regulator. Commercial appliances may need 2 PSI or 10 PSI systems with a secondary regulator at the appliance.

How to Choose the Right Regulator

  1. Count the BTU load: add up the BTU rating of every appliance fed by the regulator. A typical BBQ is 30,000–60,000 BTU; an RV furnace about 20,000 BTU.
  2. Pick the style: tank-top for a single 20 lb cylinder, two-stage for permanent or multi-appliance setups.
  3. Check the connection: POL (old-style, threaded) or ACME (newer, quick-connect) for the tank end.
  4. Verify certification: look for the CSA or ULC mark on the body.

Common Regulator Problems

If your appliance flames are yellow, weak or surging, the regulator is the first thing to check. Regulators can fail after years of service, especially if the vent was blocked by insect nests or debris. Always keep the small vent hole clear — never cover a regulator.

If you smell propane after replacing a tank, the regulator may not be seated on the tank valve. Turn the tank off, check the seal, and re-tighten.

When to Replace a Regulator

Replace a regulator if the rubber diaphragm leaks, the body is corroded, or the output pressure drifts outside the appliance range. Most manufacturers recommend replacing BBQ regulators every 5–10 years depending on use. If in doubt, replace — regulators are inexpensive compared to the risk of a gas leak.
